Short update
Where have I been? Training/transitioning to a "strategically vegetarian/vegan diet"/running. Ran a 5k today fast enough to qualify for preferred start in the half-marathon in Indy in May. More to follow re: all of those tomorrow...

Shea, Only yesterday did I notice your blog comment inviting me to join you in Kankakee for the 5K. I was certainly tempted to join you, but alas I am not yet in good enough shape for a wintertime outdoor run.
Congratulations on your qualifying finish!
Maybe I'm just too out of touch with the real world for my own good, but what's a "strategic vegetarian"?
It's not just you - a full explanation will follow shortly...
A "strategic vegetarian" is someone who, though otherwise carnivorous or omnivorous, chooses under battlefield conditions to abstain from animal flesh or animal byproducts.
Many of the famous land battles throughout history involved the use of vegetarianism as a strategy, including the Battle of the Bulge and the Battle of the Network Stars.
Famous strategic vegetarians in recent history have included General Tso, Colonel Sanders, and Field Marshall George W Bush.
I expect that Shea has chosen strategic vegetarianism in support of the ongoing "War on Terror."
No doubt Shea loves his country as much as he enjoys mustard greens and textured soy products. (I know I do.)
